Population: 62,000. Termez, established by Baktris on the
riverbanks of Oks (Amudarya), was the city of Ellinsk culture.
Its inhabitants spoke Persian, Greek and Scythian languages.
In markets they traded goods for coins with the image of Indian
Gods. When Arabs came the city became the center of Islam.
During Amir Timur's time Termez continued to prosper, however
it was destroyed at the end of 17th century. In 1897 the modern
city emerged with Russian fortress and garrison.
The history of Termez is broad and distinctive. The museum
on Pedagogical Street will tell you about tools of labor and
weapons of the Stone Age, ancient ceramics and coins. Zurmala
Tower will reveal secrets of the most ancient architecture
of Central Asia of that period.
Do not pass by Mausoleum of Al - Khakim at Termiziy. According
to the history, he was born in 748 and was known as a philosopher
and mathematician who succeeded to combine mysticism and science
together.
