Shakhrisabz,
the birthplace of Amir Timur, is located in a valley surrounded
by foothills of Pamir Mountains. It was only a small town
at the time of Tamerlane, but his descendants continued the
development of Shakhrisabz long after his death.
Timur's Ak Saray (White Palace) is among remarkable architectural
monuments in Shakhrisabz, which took over 20 years to build.
It was destroyed by Abdulla Khan of Bukhara in the 17th century.
Ak Saray
This summer place of Emir has retained its grandeur like
other memorials in Samarkand. There only remained a 40 meter
high doorway covered with gorgeous blue, white and gold mosaics.
It was probably the most Timur's large scale project built
in the nd of 14th century.
Kok-Gumbaz Mosque & Doru Tilovat
Kok-Gombaz, a huge Friday Mosque, was completed by Ulugbek
in 1437 in honor of his father Shakhruh (Timur's son). An
original burial complex of Timur's ancestors Doru Tilovat
(House of Meditation) is behind it. A mausoleum of Sheikh
Shamsuddin Kulal, the spiritual teacher of Timur and his father,
- constructed by Timur in 1374, is on the left whereas Gumbazi
Seyidon (Dome of Seyyids) is on the right. Erection of Gumbazi
Seyidon was finished by Ulugbek as a mausoleum for his offspring.
